Richard Linklater’s new space age animated film is heading to Netflix

Richard Linklater will create his new animated film, Apollo 10½: A Space Age Adventure, in collaboration with Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service has acquired the rights to the film and it will star the likes of Jack Black, Zachary Levi, Glen Powell and more. The new film is said to be a combination of hand-drawn and computer animation.

The film is said to be the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo mission to the moon and has been inspired by Linklater’s own childhood. The director created the script and will be producing for his Detour FilmProductions company alongside Tommy Pallotta, Mike Blizzard, Femke Wolting and Bruno Felix.

“It struck me years ago that this was my film to make, from both a chronological and proximity level — I was there, going into 3rd grade,” Linklater said in a statement.

“Our unique animation style allows both the conjuring of a world long gone, and the flowing, playful expression of memory and imagination.  It’s been a fun, creative journey to incorporate things like 3D graphics into a live action shoot to help bring this story to life.”

A statement from Netflix also confirms that the likes of Jessica Brynn Cohen, Sam Chipman, Josh Wiggins, Milo Coy, Lee Eddy, Bill Wise, Natalie L’Amoreaux and Danielle Guilbot will make up the rest of the cast.
