‘Remember Me’: The perfect romance movie to watch this Saturday
Whoa, Saturday’s already here, and you seem to be in the mood for a romantic watch this week. But is Netflix bothering you with the same cliched romantic recommendations? If so, it’s time to play Remember Me. If you’re thinking that it looks like just another romance watch, you’ve got to give it a few minutes… Trust us, it’s not playing that simple.
Directed by Allen Coulter, the film keeps things very real for you right from the start. Just regular people like us living a life, and you get to be a part of a special love story starring Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin.
Now, here is how the story actually plays out: It’s set in New York, and it follows Tyler (Pattinson), who is a college student with a lot of emotional baggage after losing his brother. You kind of see it right away in him that this isn’t someone who has got things figured out. And then one night, things change. He gets into trouble with the police after a street incident, and just like that… everything starts moving.
Because that’s how he ends up crossing paths with Ally (Ravin), who is the daughter of the same cop who arrested him. And whew… this is where things mess up. If you are thinking that this is going to be some accidental love story, you’re about to eat humble pie. You see, there is a setup behind how he approaches her, and you know it from the start. So when they begin spending time together, you are not just watching a romance; instead, you are watching something that feels like it could fall apart at any moment.
But then, slowly, it changes. What starts off on the wrong foot doesn’t stay there. They keep meeting and keep talking. Before you know it, things begin to feel real. And the more time they spend together, the more you see why. Both of them are carrying heavy pasts. You might wonder what the past Ally is carrying, and it turns out she, too, witnessed her mother’s murder. Pretty traumatic, but that shared weight starts to bring them closer.
At the same time, Tyler’s life outside of all this is still a huge mess, and the biggest contributor is his relationship with his father, which never really settles. You can feel that everything he is holding in is still there, just under the surface. So the story keeps pulling you in two directions: what’s building between him and Ally, and everything else that keeps threatening to break it.
The story is set in New York during the summer of 2001, and at first, that detail doesn’t seem like a big deal. There comes a point in the film where we watch everything moving forward smoothly with Tyler trying to fix things with his father, and his relationship with Ally grows stronger, and you start to think… maybe things are actually going to come together.
And then, oh man, it hits you. Tyler’s at his father’s office, just waiting. And the scene slowly reveals where he is. Don’t worry, we won’t reveal the plot twist here, but a major something happens that changes the trajectory of the film. And suddenly, all of it feels different because now you know where it was leading.
Here is something interesting about Remember Me: Pattinson wasn’t just acting here but was also involved as an executive producer. It feels so special knowing that he is trying to move beyond the image people had of him earlier in his career. And as always, his performance here was brilliant as an actor.
So yeah, it’s Saturday, and you are looking for something that’s more than just a basic love story… Remember Me delivers.
