Release date revealed for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ on Netflix
After more than two decades of waiting, the highly-anticipated sequel for Happy Gilmore is coming to Netflix next Spring. The Adam Sandler comedy was a hit among children and adults alike when it first aired in 1996, even though critics weren’t as keen on it.
For a long time, Sandler mainly starred in these family-friendly comedies and earned himself a reputation as nothing more than a low-brow comedic actor. In the years since his run of popular 1990s era-defining movies, he has appeared in some more serious roles and proved his versatility, like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems.
Yet, for many people, his old comedies were childhood staples, and watching them now brings back heavy doses of nostalgia. Thus, many fans of Sandler’s work are eagerly anticipating Happy Gilmore 2, which will revisit the titular character, a failing hockey player who finds unexpected success in golf.
Christopher McDonald starred as the antagonist of the movie, looking down on Gilmore’s golfing techniques. Julie Bowen appeared as his love interest and a PR for a golf tournament, while Carl Weathers portrayed Derick ‘Chubbs’ Peterson, Gilmore’s golf coach.
It appears that McDonald and Bowen will be reprising their roles, while other actors will be entering the film’s world for the first time. Benny Safdie, who directed Sandler in Uncut Gems is set to appear, while Margaret Qualley, who is currently receiving praise for her performance in The Substance, rapper Bad Bunny, wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, and Nick Swardson, will star, too.
There is also set to be a cameo from Travis Kelce, a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. John Daly, a professional golfer, is also going to cameo in the movie. The latter revealed that the movie has already been shot and teased its release date.
Talking to Mike Gunzelman, Daly said, “I’ve already filmed it already, we’re going to get it done,” continuing, “It’s coming out on Netflix maybe in March or April of next year.”
The film is part of an extensive deal Sandler has with Netflix. He has made many popular movies with the streamer in the past few years, including Murder Mystery (and its sequel), Hustle, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, and Leo.
There is not much information known about the plot of Happy Gilmore 2 so far, which has been directed by Kyle Newacheck and co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy. An official release date is yet to arrive, but it’s expected to land on the streaming platform in March or April, 2025.
