Premier League footballer Jamie Vardy set to land Netflix documentary
Leicester City forward and Premier League icon Jamie Vardy is set to have his own Netflix documentary. The striker recently signed a deal with the streaming platform, according to reports.
The documentary will supposedly document his climb through the ranks in football. Vardy started his career playing for non-league sides before joining Fleetwood Town, then Leicester and has since played for England. He helped Leicester claim a spot in the Premier League and was a massive contributor to their surprise Premier League win in 2016.
The documentary likely won’t just stay on the football pitch, though, as viewers will be given a glimpse into Vardy’s home life with his wife, Rebekah Vardy. Rebekah has dealt with her own share of controversy after being involved in what became known as the ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial, where Coleen Rooney (Wayne Rooney’s wife) disclosed that she believed Rebekah Vardy was leaking private information and selling stories to the press.
Rebekah took Rooney to trial and sued her for defamation. Jamie Vardy acted as a witness during the hearing; however, they were unsuccessful and reportedly owe £1.7 million to the Rooney’s in legal costs. The defamation case and incidents leading up to it have already been covered a great deal, so it’s unclear how much the documentary will discuss them.
Vardy is set to become the next footballer in a long line of big names to have his own documentary with the streaming giant. Already on the platform are David Beckham and Neymar Jr, who both have feature series about their life and football careers available to watch.
It’s unsurprising that Netflix’s football documentaries surround players who aren’t just good on the pitch but have also found themselves at the heart of controversy. Beckham discussed the many facets of his life touched upon when he made his Netflix series.
“This is the 10-year anniversary of when I retired,” he said, “It’s not just about my football career, but it’s about my family, it’s about being married to a Spice Girl, and my journey, really. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, but it’s been special making it.”
Vardy’s on-field antics have always led to him being at the heart of controversy, and his life off the pitch has had its fair share of ups and downs as well, making him the perfect subject for the streaming platform.
