‘Platform 2’ arrival date confirmed for later this year

When the horror film The Platform landed on Netflix in 2019, it became one of the platform’s most popular Spanish releases to date. Now, it’s been confirmed that The Platform 2 is set for release onto the streaming service later this year.

The Platform was a science fiction film with horror elements but a distinct social edge. It’s a social experiment all to do with crime, punishment and a new kind of class system that gives and withholds basic needs based on the two.

In Netflix’s own words, their synopsis for the film read, “In a prison where inmates are fed on a descending platform, those on the upper levels take more than their fair share while those below are left to starve on scraps, and one man decides to change the system.”

The Spanish language film was an instant success. Netflix revealed that 56million households watched the film within its first four weeks of release, making it one of their most popular original movies to date. More specifically, it became one of the most watched non-English language projects on the platform, ranking fifth in the non-English Film Top Ten category. Beyond streaming statistics, the film also did the festival circuit, picking up nominations and awards at showcases around the world.

Now, the long-awaited sequel has a release date. The Platform 2 will return to the same universe as the original, fighting against the same unjust system, but with a new twist.

Netflix writes, “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”

The second film also features a new cast of Spanish talent, bringing Game Of Thrones’ Natalia Tena into the project alongside Milena Smit from The Snow Girl and Hovik Keuchkerian from Money Heist. The original director of The Platform, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, has stuck around to lead this second offering, too.

The second offering in this dystopian film series will land on Netflix at the end of the year. The release date has been set for October 4th, 2024, as the first official teaser trailer drops. Returning to the “Vertical Self-Management Center,” the trailer levels up the drama and tension from the original for this dramatic follow-up in The Platform’s unique and gripping cinematic world.
