‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight hints at more projects following new Netflix movie
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight recently discussed the upcoming movie, teasing that the upcoming project will likely not be the last to arrive based on the popular crime drama.
Discussing the upcoming movie during a recent interview, Knight confirmed the movie had wrapped without a set release date and teased that additional projects could come later, though it’s too early to give details just yet.
Talking to Times Radio, Knight said, “It’s a bit too soon” to confirm a release date for the spinoff, adding, “You can sort of work out that it will be about a year.”
On the subject of other Peaky Blinders projects, he said, “Well, it’s interesting you should ask that question because the film is coming out and that won’t be the end.” While he didn’t share any ideas about what the future projects could be, he concluded: “It won’t be the end, let me put it that way. I’m not saying none of it.”
The BBC crime drama, starring Cillian Murphy as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby, lasted six seasons before officially ending in April 2022. However, fans speculated a spinoff movie would follow the hit show before it even finished airing, which began filming this year.
Earlier in the year, Knight confirmed that he was in the process of finalising the script, telling the Radio Times, “I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment.” Sharing more details about his process, he added, “I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, ‘That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?”
Murphy was also announced to be reprising his role as Shelby alongside Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan, who will also appear prominently. However, further details about their characters or the movie’s plot have yet to be revealed.
Discussing working with Murphy again and how vital he is to the story, Knight also told Liverpool Echo that, “He’s not just a great actor, he’s a great bloke.” He added: “He leads the line in terms of attitude. He knows his stuff, he’s an absolute professional so to see that rewarded was wonderful.”
While a release date has yet to be confirmed, the movie will likely reach screens sometime in 2025. Considering Knight confirmed the recent production wrapping, it’s expected to be sometime in the latter half of the year.
