‘Peaky Blinders’ movie officially begins filming

It may have been a BBC original production, but it was Netflix that brought Peaky Blinders to a global audience and exponentially increased its popularity, with the streaming service taking over to fund and distribute the upcoming feature-length follow-up.

Much like Idris Elba’s Luther, Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby and the rest of his clan have followed the pipeline from the BBC to Netflix, with the platform then footing the bill for a standalone movie that continues the story.

When Academy Award-winner Murphy and creator Steven Knight signalled their interest in returning to the streets of Birmingham after the show concluded following an acclaimed six-season run, it felt inevitable that the platform that helped the series become a cultural juggernaut would be the place it ended up calling home.

The film has been steadily assembling a star-studded cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth, with production now officially underway on the Peaky Blinders continuation that places the Shelby organisation in the looming shadow of the Second World War.

To commemorate the first day of principal photography, Netflix has unveiled the first image of Murphy in character. Shelby might be looking a little more haggard and is carrying more grey hairs than the last time he was seen onscreen, but he still exudes his trademark quiet intensity.

A veteran of both Netflix and Peaky Blinders, having helmed multiple episodes of the show in addition to Gal Gadot’s blockbuster action flick Heart of Stone, Tom Harper will be wielding the megaphone on the upcoming film, and he couldn’t be more excited about getting underway.

“There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew,” he shared in a statement. “We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”

The only downside is that the Peaky Blinders movie is a long way away from premiering on Netflix. With cameras only starting to roll at the beginning of October, the most generous estimate for the finished article to drop on streaming is late 2025, although early 2026 might be more realistic considering that shooting has only just kicked off, casting announcements are still to be made, and post-production won’t begin for another few months yet.

Still, the promise of more Peaky Blinders is more than enough, even if there’s a way to go before the Shelby family strolls back into view.
