Over half of Netflix users are watching anime

Netflix recently deepened its commitment to global anime strategy over the weekend. During its showcase at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, the streaming giant revealed a row of new anime titles, either released or coming soon on Netflix. Simultaneously, the streaming giant highlighted the solidification of the genre as a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment world.

According to Netflix, over 50% of its global subscribers are now anime viewers. The 50% amounts to approximately 150+million households or 300million viewers.

In the last five years, Netflix has witnessed thrice the uptick in anime viewership. Last year alone, 33 anime projects made it to Netflix’s global top ten non-English ranking chart, more than twice the number in 2021.

Additionally, anime on Netflix was viewed over a billion times worldwide last year. According to the company, 89-90% of users chose to watch dubbed anime titles. As a result, Netflix has doubled down on audio dubbing for anime in up to 33 languages.

Starting the anime grind on Netflix this year is Leviathan on July 10th, followed by the highly anticipated second part of Sakamoto Days season one. The first part of Sakamoto Days spent a whopping ten weeks on the global top ten list across 54 countries. New episodes will be released weekly, starting July 14th.

Besides this, Netflix is also bringing the superhit My Melody & Kuromi on July 24th. Another big anime release waiting in the wings is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Netflix showcased the first teaser and new key art at the LA Anime Expo.

Netflix’s anime library is already a mosaic of diverse genres. Among the titles Netflix will bring this year are Record of Ragnarok, The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity, and BEASTARS final season part two.
