‘Outer Banks’ prequel series gains momentum as Netflix show concludes its five-season run

As Netflix subscribers prepare to embark on one final mission with the Pogues in the fifth and final season of the hit teen mystery series Outer Banks, updates on the long-speculated prequel series are entering the frame.

While the fan-favourite YA series is undoubtedly famous for its globe-trotting adventures and high-stakes treasure hunts, the worldbuilding also explores a severe social divide between the working-class locals and the wealthy seasonal residents living in The Cut and Figure Eight neighbourhoods of the fictional Kildare Island.

According to an exclusive Deadline report, Outer Banks co-creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke will now explore the origins of Kildare’s social divide in a prequel series set 20 years before the events witnessed in the coming-of-age series.

The prequel series, dubbed Kildare, is drawn from a concept the trio were reportedly in talks about for a couple of years, as Jonas Pate had opened up about it in 2023 and 2024 interviews with Wilmington’s Port City Daily.

Despite noodling the idea for so long, the prequel series recently entered official development at Netflix. With Outer Banks coming to a close with its fifth and final season, the co-creators can finally focus on the spin-off.

In a recent interview with the tabloid ahead of the finale release, Josh Pate revealed, “We’re working on the script… We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”

Speaking of the prequel plot, Pate added, “It really is the story of how the island split – and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now – how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started.” Meanwhile, Burke chimed in, saying, “And seen through the stories of some of the characters you know and some new characters. But they’re 20 years before, so it’s the parents’ generation.”

As it turns out, the prequel series, referred to as Kildare, is one of the many projects the trio has been working on as they gear up for productions under their overall Netflix deal. While the streaming giant has intentionally expanded its existing original hits from Stranger Things to Bridgerton, for now, all eyes are on the Outer Banks prequel series.
