Oscars 2025: Controversial ‘Emilia Pérez’ star Karla Sofía Gascón to attend event

It has been reported that Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón will be at the Oscars 2025, despite Netflix recently scaling back its support for her ‘Best Actress’ campaign.

Gascón’s nomination made history, as she became the first openly transgender actor to ever be nominated for an Academy Award. However, the film itself was soon embroiled in controversy, receiving criticism for its questionable transgender representation and potentially offensive depiction of Mexico.

After historic tweets by Gascón criticising Muslims, George Floyd, and representation at the Oscars resurfaced, though, the controversy jumped up a level. Despite being nominated at all three ceremonies, she failed to attend the Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and Bafta Film Awards. It was also reported that Netflix had scaled back its support of Gascón during awards season, which included refusing to pay for her accommodations to attend shows.

However, The New York Post has now confirmed that she will indeed be at the Oscars on March 2nd, although it is unclear whether she will be walking the red carpet, fielding interviews, or sitting near her director Jacques Audiard or co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. Saldaña is also nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and Audiard for ‘Best Director.’

After her tweets initially reared their heads again, Gascón issued a statement to Variety saying, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalised community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Representatives for Gascón and Netflix refused to comment on the situation, so it remains to be seen how her involvement in Hollywood’s biggest night will play out.
