Oscar Isaac to lead new Netflix Vegas drama and signs major production deal
Did you also watch the second season of Beef recently and get the hunch that Oscar Isaac might be settling into Netflix? Then you are not wrong because he clearly has a lot going on with and at Netflix. He is in for a long run, and this next move makes it pretty clear Netflix is backing him in a big way.
Over the last few months, Oscar Isaac has built an amazing rapport with Netflix. It started with Frankenstein last year, where he took on Victor Frankenstein, and that role received massive love from both viewers and the award committee at the Golden Globe nominations. He followed that success with a major part in the second season of Beef, alongside Carey Mulligan, and again, the response was solid.
If you view it from a different angle, these two were very different roles, but he nailed them perfectly as he does with most of his work. And people at Netflix observed it too, as a result of which they have decided to go ahead with him for a couple of deals.
Now, Isaac is set to lead a brand-new drama series, and it will focus on the casino world. It is set in Vegas, and he will be playing Robert ‘Bobby Red’ Redman, the president of one of the most powerful hotel casinos in the city. Mind you, it is not a simple or relaxing role at all. Redman’s goal is to hold onto control while expanding his reach; the only downside is that he is surrounded by people who would happily take his spot if he slips. It is all about business.
If you are wondering about the title of this project, then nothing is finalised as of yet, but we’ll get the news soon. It is going to be an eight-episode drama.
The team behind it gives you a clear idea of the tone. Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the same duo behind Billions, are in charge of the project. If you know their style, you can expect razor-sharp writing with a lot of back-and-forth between characters who are always thinking ahead.
But you can measure the seriousness of this project by the big names like Martin Scorsese attached as an executive producer to it, alongside Paul Schiff and Beth Schacter. It is a clear indication that this is not a small project at all.
Another big piece of news is that Isaac isn’t just starring in it either. He’s also an executive producer, which links directly to the other major part of this story.
Netflix is close to finalising a first-look deal with his production company, Mad Gene, which he runs with Elvira Lind and Gena Konstantinakos. What that means is simple: any film or series they develop goes to Netflix first before anyone else gets a look at it. From Netflix’s side, it is a very easy decision. Isaac’s just delivered two well-received performances in such a short time, and they want to capitalise on that momentum.
Filming on the Vegas series is expected to begin this summer, which shows that it is not one of those faux announcements that go into the snooze box. It’s moving fast and is at the top of Netflix’s upcoming plans.
So if you are looking forward to watching more of Oscar Isaac on Netflix, keep an eye out for this one.
