Netflix is removing a large number of titles from its platform this month. Some of the items being removed might shock some viewers and even leave them confused.
While Netflix consistently adds new movies and TV shows, the streaming service is also brutal when it comes to removing different picks every month. While Netflix tends to keep the series that are getting removed a secret, there are various sources you can turn to in order to find out what programmes and films will be getting removed.
Among the titles leaving this month is the Netflix Original series Black Spot, which had two moderately successful seasons between 2017 and 2019. The streaming giant will also be getting rid of over 200 episodes of the original One Piece anime. This is a particularly confusing move, given how successful the live-action version of the series was.
A lot of the time, Netflix doesn’t have much of a say over what stays and what goes on the platform. They state on their website, “Though we strive to keep the titles you want to watch, some titles do leave Netflix because of licensing agreements.”
They continue, “Whenever a TV show or movie license is expiring, we consider things such as: If the rights to the title are still available. How popular it is in a region, and how much it costs to license.”
No doubt, there are certainly some series and movies where it is simply no longer feasible for the streaming platform to keep running it; however, it’s unclear whether this applies to their own shows, given they will most likely own the full rights to originals. Getting rid of Black Spot and other original series may be the result of future plans as opposed to restrictions placed on the streaming provider now.
