Olivia Newman to bring ‘The Remembered Soldier’ after ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’
Olivia Newman’s Remarkably Bright Creatures adaptation is officially a hit beyond borders, which means there’s no better time than now for her and Netflix to solidify their partnership.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer-director is all set to reunite with Netflix, fresh off its superhit venture Remarkably Bright Creatures, with the streaming giant winning the high-stakes bidding war to adapt Anjet Daanje’s The Remembered Soldier.
Newman has helmed the adaptation as a writer and director, and the opportunity allows her to reteam with Remarkably Bright Creatures producers Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig, who will be working on the project on behalf of Night Owl Stories.
For those curious, The Remembered Soldier is a Dutch historical novel, set post-World War I, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and is placed on the International Booker Prize longlist. The plot follows an amnesia-stricken, traumatised veteran who has no memory of his life and identity before the war.
But when Julienne Coppens enters the scene, claiming he’s her husband, a photographer named Amand, whom she thought had been lost years ago, confusion ensues. The central tension in the novel is fueled by the uncertainty surrounding her claims, with readers scratching their heads over whether it has any truth whatsoever. Soldier is built on themes of identity and memory against the backdrop of a fragile love story.
Since The Remembered Soldier’s publication by New Vessel Press last year, it has showcased a literary momentum unlike any other. It was rapidly named as one of the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2025, Wall Street Journal’s 10 Best Books of 2025, and one of Publishers Weekly 2025 Best Books of the Year, among other achievements. Like a cherry on top, Soldier also earned the 2026 Republic of Consciousness Prize.
While Gregory Cohen is executive producing for Night Owl Stories, the upcoming project solidifies Newman’s reputation in the literary adaptation world, having previously directed Where the Crawdads Sing before Remarkably Bright Creatures.
The Netflix adaptation hit streaming shelves just last Friday, quickly cracking into the weekly top 10 trends. In fact, Remarkably Bright Creatures was the number one movie on Mother’s Day, which had netizens turning to netizens reacting wildly online.
Soldier will serve as Newman’s fourth book adaptation as a director and second as a writer. Meanwhile, the adaptation marks her third partnership with Unkeless, who was behind her feature debut, First Match, currently streaming on Netflix.
