‘Old Henry’: the 2021 Western action thriller climbing the Netflix chart
Once you take a look at Netflix’s top 10 movies chart in the week ending July 12th, you will spot quite a few industry favourites that are grabbing the cinematic momentum single-handedly without genre backing, including the gripping Old Henry, starring Tim Blake Nelson.
During the week of July 6th to July 12th, the Western action movie cracked into Netflix’s weekly charts with 3.9million views, ranking eighth behind Rust Creek and F9: The Fast Saga. Meanwhile, Old Henry effortlessly rose through the ranks in the US, making itself right at home in the second spot, just below the chart-topper of the week, Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea.
Set in 1904 Oklahoma, Old Henry follows a widowed farmer named Henry and his teen son, who takes in a severely injured stranger carrying a satchel of cash and a pistol. But shortly after, when an unforgiving posse arrives, demanding that very money, Henry springs into action, putting to use his hidden gunslinging talent to defend the homestead.
The Western drama is widely praised for its clever scripting, which, despite initially coming across as a predictable homestead-siege story, pulls back the curtains on a way more complex, iconic identity twist, distancing itself from the typical cowboy vs outlaw setup.
Although the Western drama was originally released in 2021, Netflix welcomed Old Henry relatively recently on July 4th, 2026, introducing it to a massive new audience that has helped in the explosion of its streaming popularity.
That said, when Old Henry originally hit theatres following its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, it quickly earned a cult status, receiving excellent reviews that have now been carried over to its streaming run. As one of the most acclaimed Westerns of the decade, it only makes sense that subscribers are jumping to watch the film without second thoughts.
Given that the film was released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Old Henry also experienced a very limited theatrical run like its cinematic contemporaries. As a result, it was largely overlooked at the box office, even though it enjoys a promising 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly, with its Netflix availability, the movie can finally reach a wider audience it missed years ago.
While some modern Westerns lean into slow-burning, philosophical storytelling, Old Henry stands out for its brisk, intense action-driven Western. And most importantly, it feeds into the current cultural appetite for the genre, fuelled by legendary shows like Yellowstone, Godless, and 1883.
So, if you, too, are in search of a title that fulfils the Western cravings without having to commit to expansive seasons, Old Henry is currently streaming on Netflix.
