‘Nouvelle Vague’ is set for a Netflix red carpet premiere at The American French Film Festival
Netflix has only one strategy this streaming season: to go above and beyond. And to ensure the plan falls into place, the streaming giant will return to The American French Film Festival to host the red carpet premiere for Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a year after hosting Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez.
Conceived as a re-imagining of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, Nouvelle Vague will be the showpiece of the festival’s 29th edition. It will screen on October 30th at the DGA theatre on Sunset Boulevard, just before its theatrical premiere on October 31st. The film will be released on Netflix on November 14th.
Nouvelle Vague is Linklater’s homage to the power of revolution of the French New Wave and a cinematic tribute to Godard’s groundbreaking film that solidified his position in global cinema. With a potent mix of emerging talent and boldness, the film breathes new life into the dynamic and unconventional process of artistic expression.
Guillaume Marbeck stars as Godard, Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg. Nouvelle Vague will transport viewers back to the streets of Paris in 1959, capturing the essence of the transformative and groundbreaking impact of art on cinema.
“By presenting the Hollywood Premiere of Richard’s new film, TAFFF is fulfilling its original DNA, which was to foster cultural exchange between French and American filmmakers,” said board member of the Franco-American Cultural Fund and ex-President of the DGA, Taylor Hackford.
Besides highlighting Godard’s canvas of art and influence on French Cinema, Nouvelle Vague also represents “an entire generation of filmmakers,” reviving the cinematic spirit that defined the era. Hackford emphasised the French term “auteur,” which signifies a filmmaker’s hallmark style.
“Over his 33 films, Richard Linklater has proven himself to be an American Auteur, so it’s a delight that he’s chosen to celebrate one of French cinema’s greatest auteurs, Jean Luc Godard, in his French language film, Nouvelle Vague,” Hackford extolled. The film is produced by Laurent and Michéle Pétin for ARP Sélection, who are also responsible for theatrical distribution in France.
The entire schedule of The American French Film Festival will be announced on September 30th. According to Variety, Netflix is also expected to fan the flames for Nouvelle Vague in more than one category at the Oscars. Likewise, France’s Oscar committee is expected to give the film a shot at representing the nation at the prestigious competition.
