‘Nobody Wants This’ season two ending explained: Are Noah and Joanne together?

Nobody Wants This season two on Netflix concluded with indescribable tension, and of course, friction. With the agnostic podcaster Joanne and the Jewish rabbi Noah battling their own demons, the instalment completely kept viewers on their toes.

The anxiety reached new heights with Joanne’s eviction, when Noah was still uncertain about committing to moving in. But the question of whether Joanne would convert to Judaism left the pair at a major crossroads.

The second season finale happens at Joanne’s sister, Morgan’s, engagement party. But it turns out it’s not just her and Noah feigning happiness. The forks have also struck Noah’s brother, Sasha, and his sister-in-law, Esther, who have lost the spark in their marriage.

Despite the finale taking place against the backdrop of a blissful union, hearts were breaking everywhere. But how did it all come to an end this season? Let’s find out.

Does Joanne decide on conversion?

Joanne kept asking the same questions throughout Nobody Wants This season two, according to creator Erin Foster, “Do I want to be Jewish? Can I be Jewish? Am I Jewish? Should I fake it?” But knowing that pretending is not exactly in her vein, Joanne knows well that this is not how her relationship with Noah is. The showrunner explains, “She’s yearning for something to give her structure, purpose, boundaries, values, and traditions. Judaism can give her all those things.”

When the first season concluded with Noah’s grand gesture, they both understood the conversation differently. While Joanne thought the topic of conversion was completely off the charts, Noah assumed it was on a halt, but still on the chart. Since the latter is a rabbi, not being able to solve this or even come up with answers is a challenge for him.

But even though Joanne doesn’t realise it at the moment, she slowly finds herself inclined towards Judaism with every episode. In fact, she enthusiastically texts her mother when Noah says her analytical perspective “is very Jewish of her.” While she enjoys the things about Judaism, she somehow assumes, “God is going to just come down from the sky and be like, ‘And now you’re Jewish!’”

At the engagement party, especially, they seemed to be coming to the ultimate deadlock on the conversion topic, leaving Joanne to confide in Esther in the washroom. While their friendship was already a surprise, Esther was the only one who was able to open her eyes to the fact that, regardless of how much she resists, Joanne is more Jewish than she realises.

Although Esther was the one to reject Joanne at the end of the first season, the season two finale completely flips the script.

Are Noah and Joanne together?

Once Joanne realises just how Jewish she is, she runs to Noah, who’s already on her hunt, having assumed he had lost her once and for all. The scene is a great way to turn the tables on the first season’s conclusion. It initially felt like Noah wanted her to change in order for them to end up together. But in the end, he chooses her just the way she is.

So, even before she can say that she’s Jewish, Noah intervenes, telling her, “None of it matters, you are my soulmate. I don’t care if you’re Jewish. I don’t care if you’re not Jewish. I choose you every time.” Soon, they exchange a kiss and the scene blacks out. Speaking of the end, Foster says, “We wanted to end on romance, not religion.” And surely, the scene mended many broken hearts right there.
