Nicola Coughlan has “no interest” in body positivity after “really bizarre” ‘Bridgerton’ experience

Nicola Coughlan has claimed she has “no interest” in body positivity after a “really bizarre” commentary appeared regarding her looks on the latest series of Bridgerton

The actor was speaking in a new interview with Elle this week when she reflected on the current stance of body positivity movements that have taken over social media, saying she does not want to be involved in this discourse.

Coughlan said that many Bridgerton fans commented about her “plus size” body on the show, despite the fact that she had actually lost a significant amount of weight prior to the filming of the latest series.

“You know what was really bizarre was, when I was shooting that series, I was exercising a lot because I knew I had to,” she said, before adding, “I had lost a bunch of weight, [and] I was probably a size 10 and one of the corsets was a size 8.”

She continued: “And then people talked about how I was plus size and I was like, ‘How fucked are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?’”

The Irish actor then went on to explain that she takes no notice of her size nor the body positivity movement as it does not matter to her, which is seemingly a controversial stance to some.

“The thing I say sometimes that pisses people off is I have no interest in body positivity,” Coughlan said, recalling, “When I was a kid growing up, I never thought about that. I didn’t look at actors and think about their bodies. So, I actually don’t care.”

Going on to state how this does not have an impact on her life as a whole, the former Derry Girls star added: “There’s a lot of things I’m passionate about, it’s not one of them… That’s someone else’s thing. It’s not mine.”

The fourth series of Bridgerton, in which Coughlan plays Penelope Bridgerton, is now streaming with all episodes on Netflix.
