Nickelback documentary 'Hate to Love' coming to Netflix US soon

The Nickelback documentary Hate to Love will be arriving on Netflix in the US on June 26th.

Directed by Leigh Brooks, who has form in this area – he helmed the 2022 Life of Agony documentary, The Sound of Scars – the documentary about the polarising Canadian post-grunge band premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. It analyses the band’s strange position as one of the most commercially successful artists of the contemporary era but also one of the most derided.

Hate to Love: Nickelback doesn’t shy away from the band’s topsy-turvy legacy,” the synopsis reads on the TIFF website, “but it also finds enthusiastic advocates in the likes of actor Ryan Reynolds and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. Throughout, the band speaks candidly about their past highs and lows — and getting energized about the next quarter century of growling vocals, colossal drums, gnarly guitars, and irresistible hard-rock anthems.”

Best known for their 2002 Grammy-nominated breakthrough hit ‘How You Remind Me’, and then successes later in the decade like ‘Photograph’ and ‘Rockstar’ – two songs that have been heavily memed in the internet age – Nickelback have long split opinion. Despite such a nature, since their hits in the 2000s, they have continued to find commercial success with their blend of post-grunge, alternative metal and pop rock.

The question of why they are so hated by significant swathes of music fans is a complex one, with several reasons presented over the years. This list includes frontman Chad Kroeger’s comically gravelly voice, his loathable Alpha male behaviour in the past, cringy lyrics and generally cheesy music.

One notorious interview is often cited regarding the band’s frontman’s attitude. “I drank 13 Coronas in a row once, in Cabo San Lucas,” he told Playboy in 2008. “The little flap that seals off your stomach and keeps the food from coming back up in your throat, I fucked that up. I can get a Corona down in five or six seconds.”

Regarding Kroeger’s lyrics, the 2003 track ‘Figured You Out’, features the truly rotten line: “I love your lack of self-respect / While you’re passed out on the deck / I love my hands around your neck”. Elsewhere, the 2008 effort ‘S.E.X.’,contains him singing the following: “Sex is always the answer, it’s never a question”.

Furthermore, in 2003, comedian Brian Posehn made an iconic jibe about Nickelback while appearing on Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. Partaking in a panel that discussed a study linking violent lyrics to violent behaviour, he said: “No one talks about the studies that show that bad music makes people violent, like [listening to] Nickelback makes me want to kill Nickelback”.

Hate to Love: Nickelback arrives on Netflix US on June 26th.
