New Netflix limited series hits 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
Netflix shows have a way of building intrigue, whether it’s through social conundrum, media buzz, preexisting cultural presence, or simply through rave reviews. But lately, a new Netflix limited series has caught the eye with a pitch-perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, The Dead Girls. So, if you miss it, it’s at your own risk.
The Mexican miniseries has barely managed to crack the top 10 non-English shows chart on Netflix, currently ranking number ten. But The Dead Girls clearly has those glued to the screen who have given it a shot.
Based on Jorge Ibargüengoitia’s 1977 novel, Las Muertas, Netflix’s The Dead Girls is set in 1960s Mexico. What begins seemingly as a love story spirals into a gripping crime thriller filled with the gore of sex crimes, human trafficking, and serial offences. Although the limited series is a fictionalised version of the corruption in the world of crime, it’s historically based.
In fact, The Dead Girls on Netflix is based on the true story of Las Poquianchis, led by four sisters, infamously known for their horrific trail of crimes in the 1940s through 1960s. They primarily ran their trafficking ring in Guanajuato from 1945 to 1964.
Although the show has only six episodes, don’t mistake this for a no-commitment, noting the limited series label. Each episode runs for about 60-80 minutes, but once you’re in, there’s no going back.
The possibility of a sequel for The Dead Girls also stands slim because, for one, it’s conceived as a limited series. Secondly, it’s based on a book chronicling real events, which exempts it from continuity season-wise. Ibargüengoitia’s novel had long been regarded as a literary masterpiece. So, it makes complete sense that Netflix eyed it for an adaptation.
Sure, it has yet to leave a mark on Netflix. However, it has clearly left a benchmark of its own on a review aggregator site as significant as Rotten Tomatoes, practically enough to have viewers sold. In case you were oblivious to The Dead Girl’s Netflix presence, this is a sign. Count on it and waste no time in tuning into this gripping new crime thriller.
