Netflix’s 'The Last Kingdom' is set for new feature film

Netflix’s The Last Kingdom is up for its fifth and final run in 2022. However, despair not fans, as the streamer is giving the show its own spin-off feature film, titled Seven Kings Must Die

Keeping in mind Nigel Marchant, the producer’s wishes regarding how “there was always one more story” they “wanted to tell”, despite the fifth season bringing a conclusive ending to the series, it was announced that the show would get a spin-off film.

The Last Kingdom is a historical drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories that premiered in 2015 that dealt with the various invasions during the reign of the Saxons where a monarch tries to defend his kingdom from brutal Norse invasions.

The timeline of the show covers nearly five decades of ancient history that has been described as “866 following the Great Heathen Army’s arrival in Britain, focusing on the resistance of the Kingdom of Wessex to ongoing Viking incursions to Southern England.”

The filming will begin in Budapest in early 2022 right before the release of the ten-episode final season of the series debut.

Directed by Ed Bazalgette, the film will be executive produced by NBCUniversal International Studios’ Carnival Films, writer Martha Hillier and Dreymon himself. Besides Marchant, Mat Chaplin and Gareth Neame have joined the board of producers.

Alexander Dreymon, who plays the protagonist Uhtred, is set to be a part of the film besides many other “series cast along with some new faces”. Dreymon has expressed his thrill and excitement regarding the same and has thanked fans for their unbridled support.

“It’s been such a privilege to tell Uhtred’s story for five seasons. I’m so grateful to our fans,” he said.

Talking about the film, he said, “They have been immensely loyal to The Last Kingdom and thanks to their support, the team is getting together for another round.”
