Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat’ set to return for Season 5: Here’s everything to know

The Diplomat fans can stop worrying about that bloody cliffhanger, because Netflix has renewed the political thriller for a fifth season after four seasons of political backstabbing, and Kate Wyler is ready to get caught in another diplomatic nightmare. Of course we’re thrilled because bidding farewell to the show at this point will be brutal.

And Netflix has renewed it barely two weeks after season four of The Diplomat arrived, which some might argue was a torturous delay, but here we are.

Four seasons of this political thriller have amassed over 130 million views, so the streaming giant has plenty of reason to keep Keri Russell’s political drama in business. Quite the achievement for a show where a marital disagreement can have consequences reaching the White House!

And if you’ve caught up with that season four finale, you’ll know Kate and Hal have got themselves in a predicament following their public defiance of President Grace Penn. So overall, the political repercussions alone could keep Washington occupied for months, so here’s what Netflix has revealed about season five.

What will The Diplomat Season 5 be about?

Netflix hasn’t shared an official synopsis yet, but after Kate publicly resigned as ambassador during the G7 summit, the White House has got one hell of a problem on its hands. President Penn wants to stop Russian ships from entering European waters, risking a confrontation with America’s allies, and Kate’s made it clear she is having none of it.

And Kate wasn’t the only one to walk out! White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon followed her, with Hal joining them.

Now, Hal hasn’t been confirmed to have resigned, but Cahn has suggested that the finale shows what people can achieve when they stand together. And judging by how things ended, season five has got more than enough political drama to deal with.

Who will return for Season 5?

Keri Russell’s Kate and Rufus Sewell’s Hal remain central to the story, while Allison Janney’s President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford’s First Gentleman Todd Penn still have unfinished business following the finale, so consider them there.

Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah are among the familiar cast members, while Jodie Whittaker joined season four as British Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn.

Netflix hasn’t confirmed the complete season five cast, though, so guess we’ll have to wait a little.

When will The Diplomat Season 5 release?

Well, it’s too soon to say, considering Netflix has just announced the season, although seasons two, three and four arrived in October, which makes autumn 2027 the strongest possibility if we follow the pattern.
