After smashing various streaming records and making history at the Golden Globes, Netflix’s South Korean original series, Squid Game, has made history again at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Held on Sunday, January 27th, 2022, in the United States, the ceremony saw the South Korean show’s historical win as they became the first-ever South Korean TV show to pick up the SAG Award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.
Lead actor Lee Jung-Jae bagged the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award while Jung Ho-Yeon took home the trophy for the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in the Drama series. While accepting her speech, Ho-Yeon broke down in tears of disbelief and expressed her immense gratitude to one and all present.
The show was also nominated for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series award that it lost to Succession.
Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game was released in 2021 and became an instant pop-cultural phenomenon, exposing the global audience to the sheer brilliance of Korean content. It also led to the streamer investing in more foreign content and South Korean content in general.
The show is a dystopian survival thriller series set in modern-day Korea, serving as a searing critique of the power structures, class difference, economic problems and capitalism. It chronicles a perverse twist on the eponymous childhood game that compels a group of 456 participants to fight it out till death for prize money of a whopping 45.6 billion Korean Won.
Starring Lee Jung-Jae, Jung Ho-Yeon, Park Hae-Soo, Wi Ha-Jun and others, the show made history at Golden Globes. Veteran actor, O Yeong-Su, defeated Mark Duplass, Billy Crudup, and others to become the first-ever South Korean actor to win an award for the Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama.
The show will officially be back for a second season, much to the delight of their massive global fanbase.
