Netflix’s ‘Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel’ is a rom-com with a sibling twist

Netflix has a new rom-com coming out soon, and at first, it might look like another “girl meets boy in a hotel lobby” situation. But then it hits you: the real twist isn’t the romance; it’s the sisters. It’s both of them falling for the same guy.

Netflix is bringing you a series, Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel, this September, and it is as hilarious as it sounds. It looks like a rom-com but quickly turns into a war between two sisters. Sounds like drama waiting to explode, right? Well, it might seem like a regular rom-com at first, where you might be expecting a catfight like Bridesmaids, but you’ll be mistaken here. The rivalry is bound to bring all that, but it is so much more than that.

What makes it even cooler is that this is a German show. So if you are tired of binging the same sitcoms or rom-coms with the same meet-cute or love-at-first-sight scenarios, Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel has got something new for you in the box and none of that glossy stuff. And though it sounds chaotic, it has got style.

The trailer opens with Gülten and Nedret, who run a modest boutique hotel with their mother. From the first scene, you can tell they are competitive in that blood-curdling way only sisters can be. They look playful on the surface, but are ready to one-up each other, standing on the necks of their familial foes at the smallest opportunity. And then Kaan walks in. Tall, ridiculously good-looking, and with that mysterious air that Prince Charming floats on. One sister calls him destiny, the other swears he is her soulmate, and you know instantly this is not going to end neatly.

You are watching the sisters fight, flirt, and stumble over each other, and suddenly the romance feels like background noise compared to the rivalry.

What I liked is how quickly the whole vibe changes. The setup looks like it is heading toward a sweet and soft romance, but it doesn’t stay there for long. The minute Kaan enters their world, the show morphs into something sharper. Eventually, it becomes less about him, more about how far sisters will go when they are suddenly in the same race.

And because this is a German show, it has a slightly different rhythm than the rom-coms we usually binge. If you are expecting politeness and chicness, this show is not for you. By the end of the trailer, I was less interested in whether Kaan picked one of them and more curious about how long it would take before Gülten and Nedret completely lost their minds trying to win.

And before you ask, the release date is locked in. Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel arrives on Netflix on September 18th with eight episodes ready to binge. So basically, in a few weeks, we are all about to check in and watch these sisters go head-to-head while trying not to lose their minds (or their guy).
