Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’ to end after five seasons

After four series of the hit Netflix show, Outer Banks is set to end with its fifth and final season.

In light of the news, Chase Stokes, who plays John B, shared a letter on social media written by the shows creators that outlined their initial vision for the series, saying, “In the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time. From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship”.

The second part of season four is due to premiere on November 7th, with the team adding, “Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting season four behind us, and are turning to season five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet.”

Outer Banks is an action-adventure series about four teenagers who hunt for buried treasure that may help them find out why their best friend’s father mysteriously disappeared. The show is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and has made stars out of Chase Stokey, Drew Starkey and Madelyn Cline, with Drew Starkey recently having a leading role in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer.

The fourth season to the show was split into two parts, with the remaining five episodes streaming on Netflix later this week. Previously, the first three seasons were all released consecutively between 2020 and 2023.

Initially, the team behind the show had planned the fourth season as the beginning of a new trilogy after the first three seasons. The reasoning behind this was due to the 18-month time jump at the beginning of season four, with the show’s creator Josh Pate saying, “We think about the first three [seasons] as a trilogy and then we’re starting over on [another sort of] trilogy now”.

The beginning of season four has started with the friendship group nicknamed ‘the pogues’ as they hunt for Blackbeard’s gold. The second part of the season is named Pogues Against the World, released a full month after the first instalment, with the crew travelling to Morocco for the second part. The show’s creators have also announced that season four will end with a feature-length episode, with the team saying it is “the best, most powerful episode”.

Production has not yet begun on the final season, and given the previous curveballs thrown by the show’s creators with time jumps and two–part seasons, perhaps there isn’t much we can predict. But given that the show has run for seven years so far, we can imagine that it will be a little while before fans have to say goodbye to the characters. However, the cast and crew have teased that the final season will their best one yet.
