Netflix’s new holiday flick calls all animal lovers to assemble
Halloween is officially done and dusted, but don’t expect Netflix to wait until December to unleash its collection of festive content. In fact, the streaming giant is more than ready to set the mood with a holiday flick you can watch with your furry friends: A Dog’s Perfect Christmas.
Releasing on November 5th, the holiday movie is based on W Bruce Cameron’s 2020 bestselling novel of the same name. For those unaware, Cameron is incredibly famous for the A Dog’s Purpose film franchise, whose creative DNA takes centre stage in the upcoming festive offering. The film also retains A Dog’s Purpose’s co-writer Cathryn Michon, who directs a script written by Cameron, alongside Dennis Quaid, who portrayed Ethan Montgomery in the 2017 movie and A Dog’s Journey.
Michon has already promised that no dogs die in A Dog’s Perfect Christmas. So, worried fans can tune in to the Christmas flick without that anxiety.
A Dog’s Perfect Christmas is a heartwarming family tale in which a teenager, her grandfather, and his basset hound struggle to keep the household together in the wake of an emergency crisis. Narrated by the humble, wise old basset hound, Winstead, the film opens two Christmases after his wife’s death, as Grandpa Sander Goss grieves and grows crabby by the minute, always finding himself at loggerheads with his teenage granddaughter Ello.
But then tragedy strikes, leaving the Goss family in a state of immediate emergency when Ello’s mother, Juliana, falls suddenly sick and is placed in an induced coma. With the holiday season once again approaching, the family has little reason to hope for a happy year-end. However, the arrival of a chaotic, cute Corgi puppy, Ruby, changes everything and gives the family a reason to look forward to and hope for the best.
According to director Michon, the movie has been brought to life with three Corgi puppies playing Ruby, the fur baby who turns everything around for the Goss family. “I directed this movie much of the time holding one of our three corgi puppies who plays Ruby in my loving arms,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Our Animal Department Head Bonnie Judd believes strongly in socialising puppies that will be working in a film, so believe me, I fell in love with that corgi puppy times three. The names of our corgis are Harry, William, and Charles (yes, they were boys, and yes, they were named after the Royal Family!).”
A Dog’s Perfect Christmas’s first full trailer was released earlier in October. It shows a young Winstead coming out of a holiday present, and Sander taking him in his arms. While the film opens with the start of a long-standing bond, Winstead addresses the audience and reveals that things haven’t been the same since Sander’s wife’s demise two Christmases ago.
Although fans have to wait until the official release to find out whether Ruby and Winstead succeed in turning the bad times around, they won’t have to hold their horses long!
