Netflix to release Avicii documentary next month featuring narration from late DJ

Netflix has confirmed it will release a new documentary documenting the life and career of Swedish DJ Avicii next month.

The DJ, whose real name is Tim Bergling, passed away while on holiday in Oman at the age of 28. Following his death, tributes flooded in from high-profile figures, praising his musical talents as well as his kind and down-to-earth character.

After he passed away, his family released an open letter describing Bergling as “a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions” who “wanted to find peace.”

To honour his memory, the new Netflix documentary, called Avicii – I’m Tim, will feature never-before-seen interviews and footage, all with a special narration from the DJ himself.

Alongside the documentary, Netflix also plans to release Bergling’s last-ever performance in Ibiza’s Ushuaïa, allowing fans to experience his final curtain call in front of a live audience.

According to the Netflix synopsis, the documentary will follow the story of “a shy and insecure boy who, without realising it, suddenly created one of the world’s most loved artists.” It will also include “unique home movies and a huge private archive,” documenting Bergling’s “very first breath at the maternity ward in Stockholm in 1989 to the tragic end in Oman in 2018.”

It continues: “This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator and he shares his inner self in a way we haven’t heard before. Through himself and everyone close to him – family, artist colleagues and best friends – we get to know Tim – the boy behind Avicii – for the first time.”

Directed by Henrik Burman and produced by Björn Tjärnberg, the documentary is expected to be the late DJ’s most comprehensive and emotional yet, following only one previous documentary released before his death in 2017, called Avicii: True Stories.

Avicii – I’m Tim will premiere on Netflix on December 31st, 2024.
