Netflix to adapt Mitch Albom’s new novel ‘Twice’ into a film
Mitch Albom has always been the writer of life lessons. From Tuesdays With Morrie to The Five People You Meet in Heaven, his books have found a home on shelves around the world and on television screens, too. And now his work is coming to Netflix.
Safe to say his compelling writing has inspired filmmakers from time to time. And now, his latest work is already headed for the big time. Netflix has acquired his latest novel, Twice, in a competitive situation, with filmmaker Paul Weitz set to adapt and direct the story. What’s even surprising is that the novel is yet to be released.
The novel, due to be published on October 7th by Harper, imagines a love story built on magical second chances. At its heart is Alfie Logan, a man who discovers he can undo any moment and live it again. The gift comes with one important condition: he must accept the consequences of his second try, whatever they may be. (So like an extended version of About Time).
The story follows Alfie as he begins using this power in his love life. So it all starts as attempts to impress his crushes but grows into a deep connection with Gianna, the woman he believes is “the one”. Alfie builds a life with her, but temptation creeps in. That is when he learns the caveat that will define everything: once he undoes a love, that person can never fall in love with him again. The book flashes forward years later, as an older Alfie is arrested for allegedly cheating at a casino roulette table. During an interrogation, his extraordinary life story slowly reveals itself.
Weitz, who will write, direct, and produce the adaptation, is no stranger to heartfelt stories. He previously directed Kevin Hart in Netflix’s Fatherhood and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay with About a Boy. His filmography also includes American Pie, Grandma, Moving On, Admission, and the recent Apple TV+ series Murderbot, starring Alexander Skarsgård. He will produce Twice with Andrew Miano under their company, Depth of Field.
For Albom, Twice is the latest in a long line of adaptations. Tuesdays With Morrie (1999), produced by Oprah Winfrey, won four Emmy Awards. The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2004) became the most-watched TV movie of the year with 19 million viewers. For One More Day (2007), also produced by Winfrey, earned Ellen Burstyn a Screen Actors Guild nomination. And Have a Little Faith (2011) found a home with Hallmark Hall of Fame. Together, Albom’s books have sold over 42 million copies and been translated into 48 languages across 51 territories.
Netflix has not yet announced casting or a release date for the film, but with a bestselling author and a director experienced in both comedy and heartfelt drama, Twice already promises to be a story of love, regret, and what it means to live life again.
