Netflix to stream Tim Robinson’s cult classic comedy ‘Detroiters’
Given the cult status that Tim Robinson has amassed in recent years, largely thanks to the success of his off-the-wall Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave, it was only a matter of time before the streaming service looked to acquire some of his previous work, too. Hence, the platform has now announced Detroiters – the beloved sitcom starring Robinson alongside Sam Richardson – will begin streaming next month.
Robinson got his start in the comedy world as an improv performer, before being cast in the intensely popular live sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in 2012. However, it was with Detroiters that mainstream audiences were first exposed to the unique and bizarre comedy stylings of Robinson. First airing on Comedy Central in 2017, the sitcom follows the lives of Tim Kremlin (Robinson) and Sam Duvet (Richardson) as they attempt to operate a successful advertising agency.
Although Detroiters is not a sketch comedy series, many of the set-ups and gags predicted those which would later appear in I Think You Should Leave. As the pair produce a variety of low-budget television adverts for local businesses, they become enmeshed in the strange, off-beat comedy that Robinson has become synonymous with. However, there is a disappointing lack of driving crooners, or calico cut pants.
Comedy Central ran Detroiters for two series, featuring incredible writing, executive production by none other than Lorne Michaels, and an impressive range of guest stars, including Keegan-Michael Key, Tim Meadows, and professional wrestler Kevin Nash. The exact reasons for its initial cancellation are not known, but it is perhaps that the series did not have the kind of universal appeal that a network like Comedy Central were looking for.
Upon the announcement of its cancellation, Sam Richardson posted to social media, saying, “Maybe it will find a home elsewhere, who knows?” However, both Richardson and Robinson soon became occupied by writing I Think You Should Leave for Netflix.
The third season of I Think You Should Leave premiered on the platform in the 2023. Thus far, Netflix have not revealed any plans to renew the programme for a fourth season, but its incredible cult following suggests that there is much more to come from the minds of Robinson and co.
With both seasons of Detroiters coming to Netflix on October 15th, it seems obvious that the streaming giants are not yet finished with Tim Robinson. If you were a particularly optimistic person, you might theorise that the arrival suggests Netflix are interested in pursuing a third season of Detroiters, resurrecting the series in a similar vein to what they did with shows like Arrested Development.
