Netflix renews 'The Umbrella Academy' for season 3

Netflix is continuing to ride the success of the hit superhero television series The Umbrella Academy and renewed the show for a third series.

Production on the immensely popular series will begin in February in Toronto with its creators pencilling in ten new episodes. According to Netflix, pivotal cast members have all agreed to return to their roles with the likes of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore all in signed on.

The show, which was created by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way. The vast and expansive team that works on the Netflix adaptation has also confirmed that executive producer Steve Blackman will return for series three.

Illustrated by Gabriel Bá and published by Dark Horse Comics, The Umbrella Academy has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity and the new season has been confirmed just three months after second effort concluded. The release date for the new episodes is being touted for late 2021.

“Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky,” the official show synopsis reads. “Well, he was right – the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?).

“Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything.”
