Netflix show 'The Queen’s Gambit' is being turned into a stage musical

Queen’s Gambit was the surprise smash hit of 2020 and it would seem that its success knows no bounds. The theatrical rights have now been acquired for a planned musical adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the stage rights have been purchased by Level Forward theatre production to adapt the coming-of-age story of chess prodigy Beth Harmon.

“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theatre,” said CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz in a joint statement.

The statement continued, “Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

The series, which is an adaptation of Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel of the same name, was a shock hit for the streaming service, going on to be one of the most-watched and highest-rated series in the platform’s history.

Earlier this month, lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy picked up Golden Globe for her role in the series as the chess guru.
