Netflix set to team up with NASA this summer
This summer, your Netflix homepage might take you to space. Literally! In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Netflix and NASA are joining forces to bring live space content to viewers across the world. Beginning this summer, audiences will be able to stream real-time rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission updates, and even mesmerising views of Earth from the International Space Station, all without leaving their couch. For all the space enthusiasts, it is a golden opportunity.
The programming will be powered by NASA+, the agency’s official streaming platform. While NASA+ will continue to be free and accessible through NASA’s app and website, this collaboration ensures that space content reaches Netflix’s global user base of over 700million. It is a move designed to make space feel a little less distant.
Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, emphasised the broader vision behind the partnership. “The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,” she said.
Adding, “Together, we are committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration, inspiring new generations, right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand.”
This is not the first time Netflix has explored outer space as a theme. From fictional stories like The Midnight Sky and Lost in Space to documentaries such as Return to Space, space has long captured the platform’s imagination. But this time, it is not fiction or archival footage. It is happening live.
While NASA has not yet revealed the complete programming schedule, the agency confirmed that more details will be released in the coming weeks. For now, the promise is enough to generate excitement. With this partnership, science is stepping directly into pop culture, but in real time.
This summer, Netflix will not just show stories about the universe. It will broadcast the universe itself.
