Netflix steps up for ‘Black Box’ remake with Tim Fehlbaum attached to direct
Netflix has acquired the rights for an English-language remake of the French thriller, Boîte Noire, AKA Black Box, with Oscar-nominated September 5 director Tim Fehlbaum attached to direct.
Yann Gozlan directed the original film, released in 2021, by Studiocanal, with Distrib Films distributing the movie for a limited theatrical release in the US. The 2021 movie starred Pierre Niney and Lou de Laage.
The psychological thriller, which is in the DNA of The Conversation and The Parallax View, revolves around a heavily skilled young NTSB black box analyst tasked with a spine-chilling investigation in the aftermath of a devastating plane crash.
As he’s assigned to dig deeper, he discovers horrifying audio anomalies that nobody really wants to acknowledge. But the further he investigates, the more endangered his life becomes as powerful forces go on a mission to shut him out before he can reveal a jaw-dropping conspiracy.
1.21’s Andrew Mittman, who produced the Austin Butler starrer, Elvis, Dave Franco and Alison Brie-led horror flick, Together, and Wednesday on Netflix, serves as the producer for the Black Box remake for Netflix alongside Wassim Beji, Thibault Gast, and Matthias Weber, who produced the original film. 1.21’s Kai Dolbashian will executive produce the movie (via Deadline).
Fehlbaum has joined the Black Box remake following the historical drama September 5, released in 2024. The period thriller tells the story of the 1972 Munich massacre from the ABC Sports team’s perspective, which was responsible for covering the Olympics.
Fehlbaum didn’t just take on the director’s chair; he co-wrote the screenplay as well, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ earlier this year. While he also wrote and directed sci-fi thriller Tides in 2021, for those unaware, he is repped by CAA and Black Bear.
Although Netflix remains tight-lipped about the development, over time, viewers can expect the streamer to divulge more about the forthcoming adaptation. Similarly, the cast details and release window are speculated to be revealed soon.
