Netflix share new images of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' show characters

Netflix has offered another look at its upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series through a collection of new images.

To stoke fans’ excitement, the streaming giant has released new first-look photographs of several key Fire Nation characters, showing Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao and Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula. There’s also a new image of Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, with his trademark scar under one eye.

These are not the first teaser images Netflix has provided of the upcoming action series. They previously shared snaps of protagonist Aang – played by Gordon Cormier – Katara (Kiawentiio), Sakka (Ian Ousley), and Zuko.

Whilst the new adaptation of The Last Airbender does not currently have a release date, according to Variety, it will debut in 2024. Furthermore, the first season will comprise eight episodes, following Aang as he trains to become the Avatar and bring peace to the world by defeating the evil Fire Nation.

The live-action rendition isn’t all that is coming by way of the Avatar universe. The creators of the original American animated series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, are working on an animated movie that continues the story of Aang and the gang under Avatar Studios. It is rumoured that it will premiere in late 2025.

Notably, in 2010, M. Night Shyamalan adapted the first season into a live-action film, The Last Airbender, starring Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone. It was intended as the first in a trilogy based on each season of the animated series. However, it was widely panned, winning ‘Worst Picture’ and four other Razzies at the 31st Golden Raspberry Awards. This ended any hope for the franchise.
