Netflix scraps ‘Stories’ mobile games franchise based on ‘Love Is Blind’ and ‘Virgin River’
Netflix has confirmed that it will no longer be developing ‘Stories’. This was supposed to be a catalogue of interactive fiction games based on iconic dating shows from the streaming platform.
The streaming platform is still going to keep working on games but has decided against the romance theme. Instead, it has confirmed that it will be making mobile titles across party games, narrative-driven games, and kids’ games. The streaming platform has also confirmed that it will be making games that people can play on the TV.
Following the news about ‘Stories’, the Netflix offices have been reorganised. Unfortunately, this has resulted in an undetermined number of staff members being let go from their current positions.
Netflix had previously invested a large amount of money into its ‘Stories’ franchise. The interactive games which were in development were supposed to be based on the dating and romance shows that Netflix has made famous over the years.
Some of the titles in development included the likes of Emily in Paris, Outer Banks, Perfect Match, Love is Blind, and Virgin River. One of the games that was released recently was based on Sweet Magnolias, which came out in February.
Alain Tascan is responsible for this new strategy. He joined Netflix in the summer of 2024 as the president of games and has made several changes to Netflix’s structure in this department. He decided to discontinue this branch of Netflix’s games and focus on other titles instead, which he believes will prove more popular. The previously released games from ‘Netflix Stories’ will stay on the app so people will be able to continue playing whatever is still available.
“We have to match the overall mission of Netflix,” said Tascan when discussing the streaming platforms way forward with gaming, “Otherwise we’re just a distraction.”
More news surrounding Netflix’s future in gaming will follow.
