Netflix ropes in a star-studded Oscar-winning duo for ‘Positano’
Netflix is gearing up for a high-profile romantic caper against a breathtaking backdrop of a one-of-a-kind heist in Positano, helmed by Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Zoe Saldaña. So, if you like the streamer’s pedigree of heist thrillers, you’d better not miss out on this.
Directed by Academy Award winner Daniel Roher, best known for his Oscar-winning 2023 documentary Navalny and his narrative debut Tuner, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2025, the upcoming Netflix movie stars McConaughey and Saldaña as two rival thieves.
Positano, the Netflix Original heist thriller, follows a sleek jewel thief who leaves it all behind to step up for a mysterious woman as they join forces for a high-stakes heist that guarantees more than money in return.
While McConaughey and Saldaña may have been enough to grab viewers’ attention already, Positano is also joined by Toni Collette from Wayward, Karren Karagulian from Anora, Salvator Esposito from Gomorrah, Michele Savoia from Ferrari, and Lorenzo de Moor from You, Me & Tuscany.
Having said that, Netflix has completely kept character details under wraps, despite confirming that the film will be led by McConaughey and Saldaña. Similarly, the streaming giant also remains tight-lipped about the movie’s potential release window.
Principal photography kicked off earlier in May 2026 in Salerno, Italy, and the cameras were expected to roll from mid-May to mid-July, meaning Positano is most likely wrapping up as of now. Although that’s good news, according to What’s on Netflix, fans may not be able to join the stars on their Amalfi adventure until mid-to-late 2027, considering the extensive post-production process that is usually a given with major Netflix features.
It goes without saying, however, that Netflix is positioning Positano as a tentpole release that’s about to blow the audience’s minds out of proportion.
Eric Fellner and Tim Baven are producing on behalf of Working Title alongside Derrin Schlesinger. Meanwhile, Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood have co-written Positano and also serve as executive producers alongside Working Title’s Amelia Granger and Katherine Pomfret.
