Netflix revisits a chilling true-crime in ‘The Crash,’ debuting May 2026

Netflix just announced the most harrowing true-crime documentary of 2026 yet, The Crash, revisiting one of the most chilling cases of a teenage car crash in 2022.

The upcoming documentary dives deep into the 2022 incident in which 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla in Ohio intentionally rammed into a brick building at 100 mph, killing both her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan.

The case sparked extreme panic in the public, triggering nationwide backlash and an intense investigation, resulting in Shirilla’s conviction of 12 felony charges. She was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole in 15 years. Last year, she was incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women.

During her sentencing, one of the judges called her “hell on wheels,” a phrase that she has been associated with since the case.

The feature-length documentary, coming up next on Netflix, The Crash, dives deep into the devastating case, examining the nature of crime, the changing of narratives, and the tumultuous relationship at the heart of it all. The Netflix documentary is not the first time the incident has been covered in the media, as evidenced by Channel 4’s Killer Cases Season 4: Murder on Wheels and in Mean Girls Murders.

The official synopsis reads, “A car carrying three young adults slams into a brick building at 100 miles per hour in Strongsville, Ohio, leaving two lives lost and one sole survivor.” The incident took place when Shirilla was reportedly driving them home from a party. However, as detectives investigated deep into the case, what initially came across as a tragic accident began to look more like a calculated crime.

The Crash takes a deep dive into the volatile relationship at the centre, examining the shifting narratives of that fateful night to explore where a fatal mistake ends, and cold-blooded murder begins.”

Directed by Gareth Johnson, famous for The Puppet Master: Hunting The Ultimate Conman, The Crash is scheduled for release on Netflix on May 15th. Angharad Scott serves as a producer while Raw’s Rebecca North and Jonny Taylor executive produce the true-crime documentary.

Netflix and Raw TV have given birth to several high-profile collaborations, including Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer and The Tinder Swindler, among others. Now, with The Crash, the partnership is expanding and making way for more alliances in the future. So, save the date now!
