Netflix has confirmed Young Royals will be returning for a third season. The Swedish teen drama series follows the daily antics at the elite boarding school Hillerska, primarily focusing on the fictional Prince of Sweden and his blooming romance with a fellow male student. The show was created by Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung, and Camilla Holter and premiered on Thursday, July 1st, 2021.
Netflix took to Twitter to confirm the news, tweeting a video of the school’s students singing their take on the classic Christmas carol’ Twelve Days of Christmas’ yesterday (December 14th).
Ambjörn spoke to GayTimes about the upcoming third season: “I’ve always imagined Young Royals being told in three parts, and because of the fans’ dedication to our story, we get to tell the last one.” With most of Netflix’s most popular shows being cancelled out of nowhere, Young Royals fans are thrilled that the love story between Wilhem and Simon will have a well-rounded ending.
Speaking to GayTimes about a potential crossover with Heartstopper, another Netflix hit focusing on queer identities, stars Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg shared their hopes for the idea. Several years later, Simon could become a well-known singer in Sweden, and Charlie and Nick could go see him perform there. Co-star Malte Gårdinger joined in on the concept with Digitial Spy: “It’s a little crazy, but it could work. I’m all for it.”
Rudberg has also shared that the cast receives “so many beautiful letters every single day” consisting of fans “writing down their whole life stories and telling us how we’ve helped them.”
“I think that our honesty telling the story is what people connect to because when we meet people and when they write to us and see what they’re posting online,” the actor added. “They feel seen and like they’re being listened to and embodied in a fictional story about love.”
He added: “That was our goal; to tell the story as authentically as possible. With the cast and the crew that we had, we managed to do that. I think that’s the main thing that made it different from other stuff coming from Sweden, at least.”
The first and second seasons of Young Royals are available on Netflix.
