Netflix reveal first look at ‘The Thursday Murder Club’

Murder-mystery fans need wait no longer. The first look at The Thursday Murder Club, which will launch exclusively on Netflix on August 28th, has just been revealed.

Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees: Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie).

The four come from extremely different backgrounds; Mirren’s character is an ex-spy, and Brosnan’s character is an ex-union man. Kingsley’s bow-tie and tweed-wearing character is an ex-psychiatrist, while Imrie’s character is an ex-nurse.

The retirees like to solve cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their doorstep, their sleuthing takes a thrilling turn.

The murder-mystery genre is experiencing a heyday, with many other additions to the whodunit genre being extended and released. Most recently, Penn Badgley starred in the fifth and final season of the stalker-thriller You.

Proving the genre’s rising popularity, Only Murder In The Building has just recruited Renée Zellweger for the fifth season. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out installment Wake Up Dead Man is only months away.

Brosnan is used to playing an investigative, curious mind as seen in his role as James Bond, which he played between 1994 and 2002. He began with Goldeneye and ended with Die Another Day, after which Daniel Craig took on the role. In a new interview, the Irish actor claimed that it would be “a given” that any future actor to take on the role would be British, in keeping with the quintessentially British spy first dreamed up by Ian Fleming.

Directed by Chris Columbus, The Thursday Murder Club is the latest to be produced through the Netflix and Amblin Entertainment partnership. Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote wrote the screenplay.

It has not yet been announced when the trailer will be released.
