Netflix reunites Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser for a Nic Pizzolatto series
In a recent rat race between streaming counterparts, Netflix had the final laugh over a cutthroat bidding war for a high-profile project. The still-untitled project will reunite Dazed and Confused stars Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto helming the series.
According to an exclusive new report by The Hollywood Reporter, citing industry insiders, Amazon, Apple, and Netflix were in the running for this upcoming project, with Netflix ultimately edging out as the winner. The yet-untitled project is believed to be in development at Netflix. However, the deals with McConaughey and Hauser are still a work in progress.
HBO was reportedly not part of the bidding war, which makes sense considering the cold shoulders between Pizzolatto and the streamer the previous year. But moving on to what’s next for him on Netflix, although the details remain under wraps, the project is dubbed ‘The Brothers Project’. Wonder why?
Because McConaughey and Hauser are set to play brothers. While it is unclear what kind of brothers they would portray in what setting, the tabloids are putting their bets on a sports project, given that the studio behind the series is Skydance Sports. Meanwhile, Deadline speculates that the Netflix series takes place in the world of football. However, Netflix refused to comment on the development.
McConaughey and Pizzolatto have previously worked together on True Detective. They were also set to join forces for the straight-to-series FX drama Redeemer. However, that was shelved. Most recently, they reunited for a movie adaptation of the Mike Hammer book series.
Besides this, McConaughey is set to return to the cinema landscape for the first time since 2019 this fall, with The Lost Bus. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the movie is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 5th.
As for Hauser, who’s reeling from his stardom in the hit Paramount series, Yellowstone, he’s set to star in a spin-off series. Similarly, Pizzolatto’s Easy Waltz, his first-ever film where he serves as writer-director, is also due to premiere at TIFF in September.
