Netflix renews gripping Danish spy thriller, ‘The Asset,’ for a second season
The season of Netflix renewals is once again upon us, and just so you were running out of updates to get you through the week, The Asset is officially returning with a second season on the platform.
Right before opening the floodgates of February content, Netflix confirmed the return of the Danish undercover agent drama series, The Asset, for a highly anticipated second season.
Directed by Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm, the six-episode undercover thriller, The Asset, stars Clara Dessau as Tea Lind, a budding cadet in training at the police intelligence agency PET. While Tea mostly likes to keep it to herself, she has her sights set on the prize right from the outset: the takedown of the drug empires that caused substance abuse surrounding her childhood.
Despite her determination, dedication, and resilience, when she’s unexpectedly dropped from the cadet program without any warning or explanation, her whole life comes crashing down. But that’s only until she’s approached by the mysterious Folke, director of the undercover division at PET, to lead an extremely high-stakes mission, whose success guarantees her a job at PET.
All Tea really has to do is pose as Sara Linneman, a luxe jeweller, in order to get close to Ashley, who happens to be the girlfriend of Denmark’s most powerful cocaine kingpin. Even with the lack of undercover training, Tea doesn’t think twice before jumping at the opportunity. But little is she aware that Ashley’s boyfriend is steadily losing reigns of his kingdom, and the impending fallout doesn’t look nice for anyone.
The first season of The Asset was released on Netflix in October. It became the most popular series chart-topper in 52 countries and the top ten title in 90 countries after amassing 11.3million views. The studio behind the series is Profile Pictures, where Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm serves as the lead writer alongside Frederik Ringtved.
Jacob Jarek, Marta Mleczek, and Matilda Appelin are producers of The Asset, with episode producers including Johanne Algren, Oscar Giese, and Christian Bengtson.
Although the details of the second season remain shrouded in mystery, Netflix did reveal that the agents “will encounter their greatest challenges yet in the fight for survival and justice.” “It’s truly heartwarming to see how well The Asset has been received,” said Sahlstrøm.
“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to dive deeper into each character and unfold their stories for our viewers. This second season turns everything upside down as Tea and Ashley’s worlds collide once again and new challenges push them to their breaking point,” he added. While there’s no word on the second season’s release date as of yet, production will start in Copenhagen later this year.
