Netflix releases first clip of 'Squid Game' series two

The very first teaser for the second season of Squid Game has been announced during Netflix’s announcement video of the upcoming slate of TV and movie content coming in 2024.

Only a brief teaser, the short video shows Lee Jung-jae’s protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, walking through an airport while on the phone to a mysterious individual. “You’ll regret your decision,” the voice says before the protagonist replies with steely resolve, “I will find you, no matter what”.

Becoming Netflix’s most-watched show on the platform after accruing 1.65 billion viewing hours, Squid Game became an unlikely hit during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when it hit the small screen in 2021. The South Korean programme is a mysterious drama that tells the story of desperate players who compete in deadly children’s games to win humongous cash prizes.

Winning six Primetime Emmys, including ‘Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series’ and ‘Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program’, Squid Game’s iconic look has since helped it to earn an iconic status.

In 2023, Netflix aimed to replicate the success of the drama by launching the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, which used the iconography and sets from the original award-winning programme. After multiple production problems, the show failed to gain the same critical and commercial respect as the original Squid Game, with some contestants from the show even threatening legal action against Netflix for the alleged lack of proper safety regulations on set.

David Slade of Express Solicitors wrote regarding the legal case: “Contestants thought they were taking part in something fun, and those injured did not expect to suffer as they did. Now they have been left with injuries after spending time being stuck in painful stress positions in cold temperatures”.
