Netflix release red band trailer for Zack Snyder cut of ‘Rebel Moon’

Netflix has unveiled the Red Band trailer for Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of Rebel Moon, his sci-fi passion project. The new cut of the film premieres next week, on August 2nd.

The first instalment into the series, Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire, arrived on Netflix towards the end of 2023. The ambitious sci-fi epic featured a star-studded cast including Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam and Anthony Hopkins, though it received a poor critical reception upon release.

Just four months later, Snyder unveiled the second entry into the series, Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver. The sequel hit Netflix in April of this year, receiving a similarly disappointing response from audiences. Now, Netflix are set to release Snyder’s directors cut for both chapters.

The previous movie will now be renamed to Chapter One: Chalice of Blood, and has been described by Netflix as a “hardcore director’s cut about a search for warriors to defend a peaceful moon.” It boasts a run time of three hours and 24 minutes.

The second chapter of the series is titled Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, which Netflix dubs a “bigger, bloodier cut of his sci-fi saga.” The runtime comes in just under the three-hour mark.

A new Red Band trailer released by Netflix provides a glimpse at the director’s cut, opening with a shot of Boutella gazing out at a sci-fi landscape while Lankum’s ‘Go Dig My Grave’ plays in the background. The trailer hints at more intense violence and sex scenes, before inviting viewers to “Prepare to witness Zack Snyder’s true vision.”

Despite the disappointing responses to the series so far, one of Snyder’s co-writers, Kurt Johnstad, has suggested that they have mapped out six movies for the series. During a conversation with ScreenRant, the screenwriter shared, “We have everything mapped out for many, many movies. Beyond three. Beyond four. I will go on the record now. We’ve figured this out all the way to movie six.”

“Now, if we are so lucky and fortunate enough to continue telling these stories,” he continued, “that is our hope. Netflix is interested, and we’re waiting to see how these first movies go. But there is certainly a treatment for three and four. We’ve laid out very detailed… All we have to do is start writing.”

Perhaps audience responses will be more favourable towards Snyder’s upcoming director’s cut. Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness will hit Netflix next week, on August 2nd, 2024.
