Netflix orders a series adaptation of Jess Walter’s mystery thriller, ‘So Far Gone’
Netflix is stepping up with yet another high-profile adaptation, having ordered a series based on Jess Walter’s best-selling novel, So Far Gone.
Coming from Mark Bomback, the writer of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and creator of Defending Jacob, the forthcoming series, akin to Walter’s book, follows the character of Rhys Kinnick.
Kinnick is a journalist who is pulled out of retirement when his daughter disappears under mysterious circumstances. Subsequently, he joins forces with a motley crew of allies, heading off on a voyage that “confronts the dark heart of America – and his own failures as a parent.”
According to Tudum, Walter is helming So Far Gone as an executive producer alongside Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, and Nellie Reed for Story Syndicate. Meanwhile, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner will executive produce on behalf of Tomorrow Studios. Bomback is attached to the series adaptation as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.
“Jess Walter is one of the great American storytellers, and So Far Gone is a propulsive, deeply humane novel that feels both urgent and timeless,” say executive producers Garbus and Cogan. “We are thrilled to be working with Mark Bomback, whose extraordinary talent for character-driven thrillers makes him the perfect partner to bring this story to the screen.”
So Far Gone primarily revolves around Rhys Kinnick, whose self-imposed exile in the woods is cut short with the arrival of his long-estranged grandchildren. They show up at his doorstep when their mother goes missing. However, when the children end up abducted by a cult with links to their father, Rhys is left with no option but to confront the world he had once abandoned. Thankfully, he’s not alone on his mission.
Rhys is joined by a bipolar retired detective and a cutting-tongued ex-girlfriend, and together, they embark on a tumultuous journey to save the kids and track down his missing daughter.
“We are thrilled to be adapting this incredibly relevant, affecting, and entertaining novel,” executive producers Adelstein, Clements, and Bachner tell Tudum. “Kinnick is a character audiences will root for deeply as he unravels his own family mystery, which speaks so urgently to our time.”
As of now, Netflix has neither made any cast announcements nor revealed a release date for So Far Gone. So, stay tuned for further updates in the future!
