Netflix is now working on a new ‘Scott Pilgrim’ anime series

Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley is in close collaboration with Netflix to develop an upcoming anime series based on his hit graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim

Besides O’Malley, Ben David Grabinski of Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid Of the Dark? will be joining in as the writer and executive producer in the upcoming show. UCP and Netflix will develop this new adaptation and the series is set to be animated by Science SARU, an anime house, helmed by director Abel Gongora.

In 2010, the six volumes of the series that were published by Oni Press from 2004 to 2010, were adapted into a film titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World by Edgar Wright. More than a decade after its release, the film is still the greatest comic book to film adaptation.

Based on the lovesick titular protagonist, the film showed Scott Pilgrim being irrevocably in love with Ramona Flowers despite dating Knives Chau.  He is attacked by her ex while trying to pursue her and soon discovers that he must defeat seven ex’s to finally woo Ramona.

With a  comic book aesthetic, the film combined the two distinctly different media to create a quirky and wonderful effect. Additionally, the director’s innate eye for detail helped him construct comic panels within the screen, which provided a gratifying graphic novel effect. Coupled with incredibly hyperreal action sequences and a surreal premise, the sweet croon of indie rock music added to the distinct charm of the film

Starring Michael Cera as Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, the film has amassed a major cult-like following. In 2020, Wright had teased a potential sequel to the same, talking about “some plans” that were not “official yet”.

He had further added, “There are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way.” Wright, alongside Nira Park and Michael Bacall, will receive executive producer credits as well.
