Zack Snyder, the creator and director of Rebel Moon, has said that the director’s cut versions of the expansive sci-fi movie and its sequel will likely arrive on Netflix on the same day.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, arrived on Netflix in December 2023. An epic space opera, it was directed by Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hattan, adapted from a story he devised. Set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperial Motherworld, whose military wing threatens a farming colony, it is up to former soldier Kora to make a stand against the invasion.
It boasts an ensemble cast featuring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. However, it was critically panned when released.
In a new interview with I Minutemen, Snyder has maintained that he doesn’t have a specific release fate in mind for both of his director’s cuts, which will be approximately an hour longer than the two standard versions, but said a release in summer 2024 is probable. “Those will come out, probably, on the same day, later,” the filmmaker said. “We don’t have a date yet, but I think it’s going to be in the summer.”
He continued: “They’re each about an hour longer than the originals, the PG-13 [versions]. So it’ll be nice to see the six hours together. You can take a break, of course. It’s a more, maybe, immersive experience. I’m interested for people to see it that way. It’s very adult, it’s very R-rated.”
Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver arrives on Netflix on April 12th, 2024. In a December interview with EW, Snyder revealed that the new instalment will be much more intense than the first.
“Part Two is a war movie,” he said. “We know that Noble’s alive, and Belisarius has given him the task of finding his daughter and bringing her back to him at all costs. So the stakes have risen for the village from ‘hey, we want some of your grain’ to now ‘you’re harbouring the most wanted fugitive in the history of the galaxy.’”
