Netflix is removing one TV series with a 100% critic score

Each month Netflix rotates its titles. New TV shows and films are added to the platform, meaning that some have to be removed in order to make space. However, amidst the shows being axed this month is one beloved fan favourite that has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 100% score is supposed to be reserved for pure perfection. It’s granted only when a huge number of reviewers consider the film and show to be absolutely faultless, creating a top ranking of the world’s favourite pieces of media.

Amongst that top class is Jane The Virgin, a comedy-drama series that started in 2014 on The CW. The show is deeply inspired by telenovelas as it follows a Latina virgin called Jane who is accidentally inseminated by her gynaecologist. Across five seasons, the series traces the various highs and lows of motherhood amidst this complex family dynamic as Jane builds a relationship with her child’s father, Rafael, who turns out to be the owner of the hotel Jane works at and her former teenage crush. But as he’s married, the course of their co-parenting never runs smoothly.

As it’s inspired by telenovelas, there is a level of melodrama to the series. Plot twists regularly veered into wild territories where high drama and comedy meet. But thanks to the show’s incredible and engaging cast, the well-written characters that immediately hook viewers in and the beautiful craft of the series as producers created something more artistic than the average TV drama, Jane The Virgin was a huge success and remains a beloved show that people re-watch.

One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes called the show “Funny, dramatic and absolutely genius,” while another called it, “One of the best shows I’ve ever seen with a phenomenal narrator and amazing performances by Gina Rodriguez.”

All five seasons of the show have a perfect 100% review score, as critics rated it “fresh” rather than “rotten.” This rare, across-the-board raving reaction is something very few long-running TV shows manage. Most see a dip in quality or viewer engagement in the final seasons. But for Jane The Virgin, fans were hooked from start to end.

However, those good review score can’t save the show from being axed by Netflix. On September 7th, the season will be removed from the US Netflix to make space for new titles. However, the UK could follow suit. US account holders get a warning when titles are being removed, announcing the list ahead of time. Whereas in the UK, things will simply disappear, leaving fans to wonder whether this beloved series could be amongst the ones to go this month.
