Netflix is rebooting the rom-com classic ‘13 Going on 30’ for a new generation
Hold on, because you actually need a second for this, because what do you mean, 13 Going on 30 is getting a Netflix reboot? Our 13 Going on 30? With Jenna Rink, the “thirty, flirty, and thriving” line, the ‘Thriller’ dance, the Razzles, the iconic striped Versace mini slip dress… basically everything that made so many of our childhoods iconic.
And the reaction to this news is crazy, and it totally makes sense, because this isn’t just another title Netflix is rebooting. It’s one of those films people have subconsciously carried with them for years. The sweet fragrance of nostalgia this film carries with itself cannot be expressed in words. The only way to understand it is by watching it the 150th time.
Think about the effect of the film when it first got released. Most of us were younger, watching 13 Going on 30 and fully buying into that idea of waking up one day with everything figured out: your job, your apartment, your life already in place. And on top of that, that one special friend from childhood will still be in your life.
And then you grow up, and reality hits you like a truck. That’s when you watch the same movie with a totally different perspective. Hence, this announcement is such a big deal because it’s not only about bringing the story back; it’s about reconnecting with something that meant different things at different points in your life.
And then you hear that Jennifer Garner is involved again, this time as an executive producer. That’s your sign to believe that this is not a random remake. That connection to the original matters a lot more than you think. It’s a signal, a reassurance that this project isn’t being handled carelessly.
Why Netflix is bringing 13 Going on 30 back?
One of the biggest reasons behind this is that it reflects the current content strategy of Netflix perfectly. Romantic films and series have been performing well again, and someone from Netflix had a crazy idea that instead of building something entirely new from scratch, why don’t we bring something that’s already massively loved by the viewers? 13 Going on 30 fits perfectly into that mould. This film has fans from literally every age group.
Moreover, the idea of the film is evergreen: waking up older and having to deal with the consequences of who you’ve become is something we have all wondered about, and watching someone play it on screen will help us relive that. All Netflix has to do is bring in a new cast and adjust the setting while keeping the story intact. With Garner’s involvement, that sounds doable.
This will also allow the film to reach viewers who are discovering it for the first time, while still keeping in mind the people who’ve grown up watching this. And before judging the idea of a reboot, remember that many were not on the same page with the reboots of All Quiet on the Western Front and One Day, and those turned out just fine. This isn’t only about revisiting something familiar; it’s about updating it in a way that still respects why it worked in the first place.
Who’s in the cast?
The casting choices are already getting a lot of attention. Emily Bader is taking on the role of Jenna Rink, which obviously will come with a lot of expectations because of how closely people associate that character with the original performance. Garner was nothing but iconic in that role.
Then we have Logan Lerman as Matt, and he looks equally promising. Both actors bring a unique energy, which is exactly what 13 Going on 30 needs if it’s going to feel relevant again.
We are getting Brett Haley as the director who recently worked on Netflix’s adaptation of People We Met on Vacation, which again was a big hit, so all in all, Netflix knows what it’s doing with this reboot.
When is it releasing?
As for when it’s coming out, Netflix hasn’t shared a release date yet. The project is still in the early stages, so it might take a while before anything official is announced. That said, we believe that the film might get a late 2026 or early 2027 release date, but don’t worry; we’ll keep you posted.
Until then, arrivederci and au revoir.
