Netflix is bringing a documentary on Colin O’Brady’s Antarctic trek

Netflix is taking a break from true-crime documentaries to bring Colin O’Brady’s bravest Antarctic trek to the streaming screen.

O’Brady has been famous for conquering the boldest peaks and their icy poles. And Netflix is about to share one of the most daring adventures of his career.

In a documentary directed by Oscar-winner James Reed, Netflix will follow O’Brady’s next feat of a solo 2000-mile water-to-water Antarctica crossing this November. Over a period of 110 days, he will tow a 500-pound sledge across Antarctica’s interior and almost 1,000 miles of ice shelves in ruthless conditions.

O’Brady is set to overcome minus 60 Fahrenheit temperatures, katabatic winds, sastrugi, and concealed rifts to succeed in this dangerous adventure, which will be available for the world to see on Netflix screens. With the Antarctica crossing, he stacks up on a record-breaking expedition streak which started almost a decade back, all the way in 2016.

O’Brady smashed the Explorers Grand Slam in 2016, reaching the North and South Poles alongside all the Seven Summits in five months. Two years later, in 2018, he conquered the summit of every US state high point within over three weeks. In fact, later that year, he alleged to have finished the first solo, unsupported Antarctica crossing in 54 days, which was further documented in his 2020 book, The Impossible First.

But this time, the stakes are higher than ever as he aims to take on an elongated water-to-water crossing with no renewals on the supply of food or fuel. The upcoming Netflix documentary will chronicle and entwine his past achievements alongside his newest attempt to give viewers an exclusive look at the most daring polar endeavour in history.

Speaking of the forthcoming documentary on O’Brady’s ambitious adventure, Reed said to Tudum, “Colin is an exceptional athlete, there’s no doubt about that, but I want to find out who he is as a person and what really drives him. One thing that really drives my curiosity is that I genuinely don’t understand how he is going to complete this Antarctic crossing – it’s further than anyone has gone before and twice as far as he went last time, pulling much more weight.”

Although the adventure seems “impossible” to Reed, he’s equally fascinated to see what really goes down. And safe to say, he’s not alone who’s intrigued. Netflix has yet to reveal a date, but stay tuned for more updates.
