Netflix gives green light to animated ‘Ghostbusters’ series
Fans of the Ghostbusters franchise needn’t wait much longer for another fix – it has been confirmed that a new animated series is being made, which will be available to stream on Netflix.
The show was first announced in 2022, but it remained in the early stages of production for a long time. Now, it is actually going ahead, with Elliott Kalan serving as the showrunner, writer and executive producer.
The comedian has previously worked with Netflix, having written episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, beginning in 2016. Alongside writing for The Daily Show and hosting The Flop House podcast, Kalan has also written the popular comic book series Spider-Man and the X-Men.
This new animated Ghostbusters series is being executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, both of whom have been involved with the franchise in the past. Reitman, best known for directing Juno, previously helmed Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which emerged in 2021 to mixed reviews. Additionally, his father, Ivan Reitman, directed the beloved original Ghostbusters movie.
Kenan penned Ghostbusters: Afterlife with Reitman before directing its sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which Reitman also co-wrote. Both movies were extremely popular, each grossing several hundred million. Thus, we can only expect that a new addition to the franchise will also garner plenty of viewers.
Little is known about the new animated series so far, including plot details and the cast. However, it has been compared to the previous two Ghostbusters films in terms of its tone, so it’s certain to be humorous and full of action.
Talking to ComicBook, Kenan said: “I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realised by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak.”
He added, “Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.”
This is the third animated series in the Ghostbusters franchise, following The Real Ghostbusters, which aired between 1986 to 1991, and 1997’s Extreme Ghostbusters. It seems as though the new Netflix series will be more popular if the success of the recent movies are anything to go by.
