Netflix confirms 'Ransom Canyon' a new drama starring Josh Duhamel

Netflix has officially greenlit the production of Ransom Canyon, a forthcoming drama series based on Jodi Thomas’ book series. The streaming platform has committed to a ten-episode first season for the adaptation, featuring lead actors Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly.

Positioned as a romance-infused family drama and a contemporary western saga, the show will intricately weave the lives of three ranching families against the rugged backdrop of Texas Hill Country.

April Blair is tapped to be the series’ writer and executive producer, with Amanda Marsalis, known for her work on shows like Ozark and Umbrella Academy, set to direct the initial two episodes, as reported by Futon Critic.

In Ransom Canyon, Josh Duhamel takes on the role of Staten Kirkland, the resolute owner of the expansive Double K Ranch. His unwavering and stoic demeanour positions him as the leader in the battle against external threats, endangering both his cherished way of life and the land he holds dear.

Meanwhile, Minka Kelly portrays Quinn, a character who, having lived in the shadows of others, returns to Ransom Canyon after pursuing a career as a concert pianist in New York. Her journey unfolds as she endeavours to carve out a new and independent path for herself in the picturesque yet challenging landscape.

The show has been in development at Netflix for some time as Netflix’s Head of Drama, Development, Jinny Howe told Deadline back in 2022 that the platform was “very excited” about the show it described as being “Virgin River meets Yellowstone.”

“It’s a contemporary Western romance show, just looking for more in this comfort romance space,” Howe said. “We think that it’s going to deliver on all the romance and again it will be a really beautiful vista and setting, very escapist.”
